Take a green holiday
Taking a holiday? Lucky you!!! Think about some of these the next time you set off:
Avoid air travel. Flying is one of the fastest growing sources of greenhouse pollution.
Cheap flights? Can't resist? Thought about offestting? Flights are so cheap at the moment that it’s almost impossible to resist hopping on a plane, even though flying is seriously bad for climate change. How to green your flights? Offset them. Pay a few dollars and fly carbon neutral (Virgin and Qantas both have uber-cheap offsetting options or you can offset through one of the following organizations – Climate Positive, Climate Friendly or Carbon Reduction Institute).
Unsubscribe from your airlines emailing list. It’s a good way to avoid being tempted with little holidays just because you got a cheap ticket offer in your inbox.
Try a green getaway. The next holiday you take, go green where you can. You might want to consider holidaying locally, holidaying in an certified eco-house or lodge, a volunteering holiday, or a holiday that contributes someway to the local community and environment.
Holiday by the sea? Surf safe. When going coastal, remember we share our coastline with many species of birds that use our estuarine and beach systems for sleeping, eating and breeding - it's their home. These areas are especially sensitive to human interference, so take care to avoid impacting these sand dunes and other coastal zones. Keep your dog on the leash and only drive 4WD vehicles in areas where they are permitted. Learn about your local shorebird species, they are your neighbours.
